Budget Update Memo from The Superintendent

Dear GUSD Staff,

I am writing to provide you with an update about the 2012-2013 budget and steps being taken to balance it by June 30, 2012.

As you know, public school funding has steadily decreased since 2008. Over the past four years, it has been necessary to cut the GUSD budget by $18 million with cuts each of those years between $3-5 million. Many aspects of our district have been impacted including class sizes, instructional days and staff development days, transportation, District Office, Tier 3 state funded programs, and electives at the middle school level. A Message From The Superintendent

It is hard to believe the winter break is upon us and that almost half of the school year has passed.  So many positive things have happened this past year and were acknowledged at several board meetings in November.  150 students were  recognized who received a perfect score on one or more of the spring 2011 CST exams.  Five (5) elementary schools (Eliot, Las Animas, Luigi Aprea, Rod Kelley, and Rucker) and three (3) secondary schools (Brownell, Gilroy Early College Academy-GECA, and Solorsano) were recognized for breaking the 800 API mark.  One of our high schools, GECA, broke the 900 API mark.  The District also reached the 800 API level for the first time in our history.  Of special note, Brownell exited Program  Improvement (P.I.) status, which was a major accomplishment.   (more)
